Joy Harjo: OKPOP

From Oklahoma Roots to Global Rhythms: Joy Harjo on Poetry, Music, and Muscogee Inspiration.

Joy Harjo is not only a celebrated poet and the first Native American to serve as the U.S. Poet Laureate, but she is also a talented musician. She plays the saxophone and the flute and has released seven award-winning albums of original music. She finds inspiration in her Muscogee (Creek) heritage and, of course, some good old fashioned jazz, rock, and funk. Her love of music began at home dancin’ and singin’ with her mom and dad. We appreciate Joy sharing so much about her life growing up in Oklahoma and how it influences her creative work today.
